Hasan al-Basri or Abu Sa'id al-Hasan, commonly known as
Hazrat Hasan Basri (raiyallahu anhu), was a distinguished Islamic scholar and a
significant figure in the early history of Islam. In the year 642 CE (21 AH),
just ten years after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) passed away, he
was born in Medina, Saudi Arabia. One of the most well-known and upright
Tabi'un (followers of the Companions of the Prophet), Hazrat Hasan Basri is
highly appreciated.
Early Years and Education: Hazrat Hasan Basri was a non-Arab
born to a non-Arab family. His mother, Umm Salama, was one of the wives of the
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and her slave, Yasar, belonged to her. However, Hazrat
Hasan Basri was raised in a noble family following the manumission of his
father.
Hazrat Hasan Basri's knowledge and comprehension of Islam
were significantly shaped by his education. His early education was provided by
notable Medina scholars Abdullah ibn Umar (raiyallahu anhu) and Abdullah ibn
Abbas (raiyallahu anhu), who were both well-known Companions of the Prophet.
Journey to Kufa: Hazrat Hasan Basri made a momentous
life-changing journey to Kufa, which is located in modern-day Iraq. He went
there for educational purposes and to interact with the local Muslim
population. Scholars and students from various regions of the Islamic world
travelled to Kufa because of its reputation for having a stimulating
intellectual and spiritual environment.
Scholarship and Influence: Hazrat Hasan Basri dedicated his
life to learning and imparting the Islamic sciences at Kufa. He rose to
prominence as a scholar and jurist, gaining notoriety for his command of a
number of subjects, including Hadith, Islamic law (fiqh), and spirituality
(tasawwuf).
The teachings of Hazrat Hasan Basri concentrated on the spiritual
and moral tenets of Islam, stressing the significance of heart purification and
keeping an authentic and close contact with Allah. He attracted a sizable
following of pupils and disciples because to the tremendous effect that his
sermons and lectures had on the hearts and minds of the audience.
Sufyan al-Thawri, Imam Abu Hanifa, and Imam Malik were among
the prominent scholars of the day who respected Hazrat Hasan Basri and sought
his counsel. He was revered by both the general populace and the ruling elite,
and his impact went beyond the academic community.
Character and Piety: Hazrat Hasan Basri was well-known for
leading an austere lifestyle and shunning material belongings. He led a
straightforward, modest life, frequently donning dirty clothing and consuming
meagre fare. His pursuit of knowledge and the spiritual path took precedence
above any position of power or fortune.
Numerous anecdotes and stories show his righteousness and
illustrious character, and his piety and loyalty to Allah were highly
appreciated. The focus Hazrat Hasan Basri placed on moral development,
self-reflection, and inner purification made a long-lasting impression on his
pupils and followers.
Death and Legacy: Hazrat Hasan Basri went away in Basra,
Iraq, in the year 728 CE (110 AH). Many people who understood his enormous
contribution to Islamic knowledge and spirituality regretted his passing.
Muslims are still inspired by and led by Hazrat Hasan
Basri's teachings today. His emphasis on the pursuit of knowledge, humility,
and self-discipline as a method of achieving
