Prophet Ismaeel (peace be upon him) holds a significant
place in Islamic history as a revered prophet and a prominent figure in the
lineage of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His story is mentioned in
the Quran and other Islamic literature. Here is the story of Prophet Ismaeel
(peace be upon him):
Ismaeel
(Ishmael) was the son of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his wife Hajar (Hagar).
Ibrahim and Hajar lived in the land of Canaan, present-day Palestine. They were
a devoted couple who believed in the oneness of Allah and submitted to His
commandments.
Ibrahim
and Hajar faced great trials in their quest to establish monotheism. They
longed for a child, but they remained childless for many years. In their old
age, Allah blessed them with a son, Ismaeel, through divine intervention.
When
Ismaeel was still a young child, Ibrahim received a command from Allah to take
Hajar and Ismaeel to a desolate valley in the vicinity of the Kaaba in Mecca.
This valley, known as Bakkah, had no human settlement or vegetation at that
time. Ibrahim obediently followed the divine instruction, knowing it was a test
of his faith.
Ibrahim
left Hajar and Ismaeel in the barren valley with limited provisions. As he
prepared to leave, Hajar, concerned about the welfare of her child, asked him
if Allah commanded him to abandon them. Ibrahim assured her that it was Allah's
command and left, putting his trust in the Almighty.
In
the desolate valley, the mother and son faced severe hardships. They ran out of
food and water, and the baby Ismaeel became weak and cried due to thirst. In
her distress, Hajar searched for water desperately. Running back and forth
between two hills known as Safa and Marwa, she sought any sign of relief or
assistance.
Allah,
in His infinite mercy, witnessed Hajar's struggle and answered her prayers. He
caused a spring of water, known as Zamzam, to gush forth near Ismaeel's feet.
The miraculous spring quenched their thirst and provided sustenance for them.
This blessed well still exists today and is a vital part of the rituals of Hajj
and Umrah.
The
valley of Bakkah gradually transformed into a thriving settlement due to the
presence of Zamzam water. People from surrounding regions, including the tribe
of Jurhum, started to settle there, leading to the establishment of the city of
Mecca.
As
Ismaeel grew up, Ibrahim would visit him and Hajar regularly. On one such
visit, Ibrahim received a divine commandment to build the Kaaba, the sacred
house of worship dedicated to the worship of Allah. He and Ismaeel were
instructed to construct it using the foundations that were originally laid by
Prophet Adam (peace be upon him).
Father
and son worked together to fulfill this divine commandment, laying the
cornerstone of the Kaaba. They prayed to Allah to accept their efforts and make
them steadfast in their faith. Allah responded to their supplication, affirming
that the Kaaba would be a place of pilgrimage for people from all corners of
the earth.
Ismaeel
grew up to become a prophet and a righteous individual, preaching the message
of monotheism and obedience to Allah. He married from the tribe of Jurhum and
had twelve sons, who became the founders of influential Arab tribes.
The story of Prophet Ismaeel (peace be upon him) highlights
the unwavering faith of Ibrahim, Hajar, and Ismaeel in Allah's commands, even
in the face of immense challenges. Their story also emphasizes the significance
of trust in divine providence and the eventual blessings that result from unwavering
obedience.
